Scarborough, Western Australia

Scarborough is a beachside community located 12 kilometres west of Perth CBD, is one of the city’s sought after addresses, and is one of the most popular beaches located on Perth’s Sunset Coast even though the waves are limited in size.

The beach is patrolled during the summer by members of the Scarborough Surf Life Saving Club. For enthusiastic picnickers, there are picnic gazebos and grassy areas where one can enjoy food without the danger of sand getting into them. Water sports activities include swimming, surfing and body boarding. Windsurfing and kite surfing are popular when the “Fremantle Doctor” blows in the afternoon, and surfing events are held regularly at the beach.

This coastal community is named after the English beach resort Scarborough. The Rendezvous Hotel Observation City which is the only beachside high rise five star resort in Western Australia was built in 1986. Local residents often spelt Scarborough as “Scarboro” eg. Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club.

Scarborough Beach is linked to Trigg Beach by a heritage walk trail. There are rock pools and an off shore island at Trigg Beach is popular with anglers. There is also the Trigg Bushland Reserve for those who appreciate nature.

Herdsman Lake, a wetland wildlife sanctuary is an open water haven for many migratory birds especially during drought season. An education centre, viewing centre, playground, walking and cycling tracks are also located within the lake reserve.

Rottnest Island located 20 kilometres off the coast is unique for its quokkas (mini kangaroo-like creatures) can be accessed by ferry.
