Quinns Rocks is located 40 kilometres or half an hour’s drive north of Perth, Western Australia, and is located within the City of Wanneroo local government area.
Quinns Rocks is named after the offshore reef and in honour of Robert Quin who was conducting a survey up to a location about 4 kilometres south-east of the rocks in 1866. Robert Quin emigrated to Western Australia in 1863 and was appointed Assistant Surveyor, a position he held for 22 years. The coast opposite the rocks was named Quinns Rocks. The location is also known as Wanneroo Beach.
Back in 1930, the Wanneroo Road Board charged holiday makers $4.20 per annum for “boatshed and campsite permits” for the use of the beachfront. Permanent residents only came to the area in 1942. In the 1950s, shacks lining the beachfront increased in numbers. The leasing of the beach front reserve was slowly phased out, and by August 1959 most of the shacks were removed.
A major sale in June 1959 saw nearly 300 blocks of land being purchased, and Quinns Rocks was declared a town site in July 1962. Further development took place in 1964 and 1972. The locality, originally gazetted as Quinns in 1974 was changed to Quinns Rocks in 1977.
Water activities in a Mediterranean climate including boating, fishing, surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, exploring the many shipwrecks off the coast can all be carried out at a leisure pace.
The community also boasts a good number of parks and recreational facilities, plus walking tracks enable visitors to view the variety of flora and fauna. Visit Coopers Lime Kilns, which is a significant local historical ruin.
