Ledge Point is a small coastal town located 100 kms north of Perth, Western Australia or one and a half hours drive along Wanneroo Road from Perth. This town is known for its local fishing and Cray fishing industries. It also has a small commercial rock lobster catching industry.
Famous for its windsurfing, every year in January, the Ledge Point to Lancelin Windsurfing Classic attracts worldwide competitors because of its world class surfing conditions.
The Dutch shipwreck, Vergulde Draeck (meaning Gilt Dragon) which sunk after hitting a reef in 1656, was discovered by divers in 1963. It is one of the first European ships to sail to Australia. A full expedition was conducted to excavate whatever remains of the artifacts from damage done by looters. The artifacts discovered are now on display at the Maritime Museums in Geraldton and Fremantle.
Besides its beautiful beaches, Ledge Point has a nine hole golf course and a caravan park within the town. There are numerous recreational activities to participate in and tennis courts, bowling greens, sand dunes accessible by 4 wheel drive tracks and a newly renovated Country Club are available for use.
Half of Ledge Point’s population consists of visitors and holiday makers. The permanent residents only formed a small community in this relaxing and quiet town.
Lancelin, a bigger town best known for its windsurfing, kite surfing and surfing beach is only 15 minutes away.
